Engagement Session in Annecy: Vieille Ville & Lac d'Annecy

D & B were staying in Chamonix when they decided to come to Annecy for their engagement session. A gift from D's sister, a session to mark their engagement during a trip through Europe.
I am a film photographer based in the French Alps, and Annecy is one of my favourite locations for engagement sessions in the region. The old town, the lake, the mountain light, it offers something that very few places in France can match.

Engagement session in the Vieille Ville d'Annecy
We started in the old town, the Vieille Ville d'Annecy, where the canals run alongside the buildings and the stone archways frame every corner like a scene that was designed to be photographed, except it has been there for centuries .
The Palais de l'Isle, the Canal du Thiou, the flower-covered bridges along the quais de l'Île, these are the landmarks most couples think of when they imagine Annecy, and for good reason. The light in the Vieille Ville falls at an angle that is particular to this latitude and this elevation, warm and slightly golden, the kind of light that film was made to capture.
D & B are the kind of couple who fill their free days with hikes and coffee and outdoor adventures. They were a little unsure of themselves in front of the camera at first, they said so themselves, openly and without embarrassment, and within twenty minutes of wandering the old town together, they had completely forgotten it was there. That is usually how it goes, when you give people enough space to just be with each other.

A boat on Lac d'Annecy with Croisières des Alpes
The second part of the session was on the water.
We boarded a boat with Croisières des Alpes, one of the most beautiful ways to experience Lac d'Annecy, and one that very few engagement sessions take advantage of. The lake stretches between the Alps on either side, the water is a shade of blue-green that seems almost impossible until you are standing in front of it, and the mountains reflect on the surface in a way that makes every frame feel like it belongs somewhere else entirely.
Lac d'Annecy is often compared to Lake Como, and the comparison is fair. The same clarity of water, the same drama of peaks surrounding the lake, the same quality of light that seems to arrive from several directions at once. What Lac d'Annecy has that Lake Como does not is a sense of intimacy, it is smaller, quieter, less trafficked, and the surrounding landscape feels closer, more present.
On the boat, with champagne and nowhere to be except exactly where they were, D&B relaxed into each other completely. Some of the strongest images from the session came from those thirty minutes on the water, not despite the simplicity of the setting, but because of it.

Annecy as an engagement session destination in the French Alps
Annecy is one of the most versatile locations for an engagement session in the French Alps. Within a single afternoon, it offers the architectural character of the Vieille Ville, the natural drama of Lac d'Annecy, and the mountain backdrop that defines this part of France.
For couples visiting the region, whether staying in Chamonix, Megève, Geneva, or Annecy itself, a session here can be easily incorporated into a longer trip through Europe. The town is 45 minutes from Geneva airport, 2 hours from Lyon, and 3 hours from Paris by train.
The best light for an outdoor session in Annecy is in the late afternoon and early evening: the Vieille Ville faces west and the lake catches the last of the sun in a way that is particularly well-suited to film photography. Spring and early autumn are the most favourable seasons, when the light is warm and the crowds are manageable, but we could still imagine a slow summer morning too.
For couples who want to add a boat component to their session, Croisières des Alpes offers private and shared cruises on Lac d'Annecy throughout the season. I can coordinate the logistics as part of the session planning.

Film engagement photographer in Annecy and the French Alps
I am based in the French Alps and available for engagement sessions and couple shoots throughout the region: Annecy, Chamonix, and beyond.
I shoot on analog film, which means every frame is chosen deliberately. The results have a texture and a warmth that is particular to this medium, and that holds up, in the way that matters, when you look at these images ten or twenty years from now.
If you are planning a trip to the French Alps and would like to add a session to your itinerary, I would love to hear from you. I work in English, French and Spanish, and I am used to working with international couples visiting the region.
